Case Study 1: A Major High Street Retailer

ICE Renewables were commissioned and eventually retained by a major high street retailer as their primary renewable energy consultants. ICE's first task was to assess the feasibility of installing a number of large turbines (600kW+) upon their main office site. As part of this study the client commissioned a 12 month wind study to be completed by the unique AQ500 wind speed system. This system measures the speed, direction, turbulence and shear factor of the wind. These measurements are then fed directly via wireless modem to a anaylictical team where they are analysied and graphed so that they are ready to be fed back to the client as required. As a direct consequence of this work ICE Renewables were then commissioned to analysis the potential of each of the clients 200+ edge of town stores and distribution centres as to their solar photovoltaic and wind potential. aq500

Outcome

After assessing the wind potential of each of the edge of town stores two were identified as having the highest wind resource. ICE renewables then organised to install a number of test turbines upon each of the stores identified. This test is being used to practically assess each turbine upon its individual merits. It is hoped that once this test has been completed this process can be repeated for their remaining edge of town stores to create a visual demonstration of the clients renewable energy commitments and forward thinking.

Case study 2: Industrial site in Oldham

ICE Renewables were commissioned to undertake a feasibility study for the installation of renewable technologies at an unoccupied industrial site in Oldham.  The site is about 1.2 hectares in area and is currently being developed to house office buildings.

ICE Renewables provided the client with the following information:

  • An indication as to which renewable technologies may be feasible (wind, solar photovoltaic, solar thermal, geothermal and rainwater harvesting)·
  • Indicative costs and payback periods of each feasible technologies·
  • Likely success of each potential implementation
  • An overview of the risks associated with each installation
Outcome

ICE Renewables guided the client through the technologies and after which enough information was provided to allow the client to decide that solar thermal was most suitable for their needs. ICE Renewables then organised for the installation of solar thermal systems upon a number of the roofs available. The system is fully installed and is believed to be working above expectations.

Case Study 3 :  UK Rail Franchise Operator

ICE Renewables were commissioned to undertake a Feasibility Study at a rail depot for the installation of renewable energy technologies. Located in the Greater Leeds city area adjacent to the York – Leeds mainline railway, this was a 25 acre site incorporating railway sidings, railway maintenance sheds, administrative buildings and train wash. The benefits delivered at this stage were:

·              Likely technologies that would be suitable for these sites.

·              Indicative costs of these technologies.

·              Likely payback periods for these technologies.

·              Likely success of each potential implementation.

·              An estimated risk percentage for each of the above.

Outcome

ICE Renewables produced a detailed report enabling the Rail Franchise Operator to understand which types of technologies best suited the site and their energy consumption and allowed an informed decision, as to whether to install decentralised energy generation equipment, to be made. The detailed report led to another 6 feasibility studies with a second train company.
